On the morning of May 2, 1987, a recently graduated young veterinarian walked through the front door of Blue Cross Animal Hospital to start her first shift as an associate vet. No one could have predicted that day that the road would continue until this morning or the changes and growth that would come along the way.
Today marks Dr. Hazel Eaglesome’s 30th anniversary at Blue Cross Animal Hospital.
Since that first morning, veterinary medicine has changed, and Blue Cross Animal Hospital has changed and grown along with it, thanks in no small part to Dr. E herself. Most likely, even she couldn’t have foretold some of these changes, but her passion for this hospital and her patients, and her driving commitment to deliver the best possible care to you, her clients and patients have been unwavering. She is continuously focused on improving and updating the capabilites and care this hospital provides.
Change and Growth
Over the 30 years, she has gone from being an associate vet to a partner, to the sole owner. When Dr. Eaglesome started, the hospital had only one exam room, and operated on only the first floor of the building. On her watch, the hospital has expanded to three exam rooms, and taken over the second floor of the building, with all administration now being on the second floor, including offices, a lunch room, computer stations for the vets, and our Client Care call center, which handles all our email and telephone calls with clients. In 2012 we completed an extensive renovation of the front of the building, creating a more usable pet-friendly entrance with cat parking, better lighting, signage, and client information displays.
In 1987, the hospital was completely uncomputerized, as most businesses were at that time. We had only minimal in-house lab capabilities and an old x-ray machine. We now have 22 computers on our network, as well as in-house lab facilities, x-ray, dental x-ray and ultrasound stations that all feed directly into our practice management and medical record keeping software, all helping to keep our standard of care as high as possible. We have added better, safer anesthesia capabilities, a separate dental surgical suite, and Laser Therapy.
On that May day in 1987, this hospital had 9 employees. We now have a staff of 30, including 7 veterinarians, 6 technicians, and large patient and client care teams, all focussed on bringing the best possible care to your four-legged family.
Since May 2, 1987, Dr. Eaglesome estimates that she has seen 110,000 patients, done over 35,000 surgeries, and worked with 23 other veterinarians here at Blue Cross Animal Hospital, six of whom are working here today.
Dr. Eaglesome’s passion for practice, pets, and their health has also lead to changes in the care we provide here at Blue Cross Animal Hospital. In addition to the dramatic changes in the facility, over the years we have continuously improved the care we deliver. We have gone to need-based vaccination protocols, instead of annual. It was Dr. Eaglesome’s decision to stop de-clawing cats because it was the right thing to do. It was a decision which led to paws-itive feedback from hundreds of people.
In recent years, we have become American Animal Hospital Association Accredited, a signifier that we are in the company of the top 15% of practices in North America. As well, we are now bringing the Fear Free program into the hospital, certifying staff and implementing changes in how we practice.
Hazel would like to thank the amazing team that have worked here over the years and those who continue to do so, each contributing in his or her own way to building a practice we can all be proud of.
Congratulations, Dr. E!
