Everyone knows it’s important to keep your own contact information up to date on your pets’ record, not just with us, but also on your microchip. However it might not occur to you that it’s also important that you have at least one additional person on your file who we can contact, and who you trust to make decisions about your pet’s care.
It’s not uncommon for us to have your pet in our care, and need information or permission for treatment and be unable to reach you, our only contact. There are many ways in which this can occur:
- Your pet may be boarding either with us or somewhere else and have an unexpected medical issue.
- Your dog could be involved in a fight or accident while out with a dog walker. Your pet may escape from your yard or house, and be brought into our hospital by someone else, and require care.
- You yourself could have an accident or medical issue and be unreachable.
- It could just be that your phone is unavailable due to network or battery problems or because you are on holiday out of the country.
We sincerely hope that none of the above come to pass, but if they do, we are legally empowered to take instructions about your pet’s care ONLY from someone who is identified as an alternate contact on your pet’s file.
If you haven’t already done so, please think about who in your life you trust with these decisions. Talk with them and get their permission, and then please make sure we have contact details on file for them as well as you. It’s also a good idea to include any regular house sitters, dog walkers or boarding facilities that you use.
