Introducing our newest Fear Free tool–Slow Treaters, or as we call them here, Licky Mats!
I’m sure you’re wondering, what in the world is a licky mat? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like! It’s a mat that we smear with wet food and treats so that your pet can enjoy a delicious snack during minor treatments.
The mat is smooth with soft bristles in the middle and is very gentle on your dog or cat’s delicate tongue. The bristles and grooves in the mat help to hold the food, meaning it takes a while for your pet to lick all of it up! This way, they aren’t swallowing large amounts of food all at once. Slow Treaters have suction cups that allow you to stick them to tables, floors and walls, so the mat doesn’t slip and move while your pet is going to town on their snack.
We have found that the licky mats have been an incredibly great distraction for pets that may be prone to experiencing fear, anxiety or stress at the vet; instead of focusing on something they may find intimidating, they pay no attention at all to the thing they perceive as scary. Instead, they are completely fixated on the yummy food in front of them.
Some treatments we have been using the licky mats for are nail trims, ear treatments, vaccines, bandaging, and so much more. They’ve been a hugely positive addition to our Fear Free toolkit.
We’re very excited about how much these feeders have helped our patients be more comfortable during their visits.
We realized that they could also be extremely helpful for some of your home pet care. If your dog or cat is resistant to nail-trims, ear cleaning, brushing, baths, or any other home pet care task, these feeders may just be the answer to lowering the stress of these procedures for you and your pet.
