We are in the heart of flea season. From August until there is a good hard frost in December, fleas will be plaguing our pets.
There are literally hundreds of “flea control” products available from various sources. In them you can find a huge variety of ingredients of widely varying effectiveness and safety. Please be very careful with what you choose to kill fleas, especially with cats. It is vital that you read the label, but also remember that many off the shelf flea products aren’t accurately or adequately labelled, and frankly many are not very effective. The spot-on products that you can get at a pet store are not the same as those that veterinarians can provide. Most importantly, never use a product intended for dogs on a cat. It could kill the cat. Always read the label: Permethrin is the active ingredient in many flea control products for dogs and premises, and it can cause seizures and life threatening muscle tremors in cats.
If you suspect your cat has been exposed to Permethrin, call us immediately for treatment advice.
Please ask for advice from your veterinarian before purchasing or using any product to treat fleas on your cat or a dog, or in your home.
